The provider who excels at one-person IT support for a small office may be entirely wrong for a custom software project, and vice versa. Before you engage anyone, write down specifically what problem you need solved, what the outcome looks like when it is solved, and roughly what budget and timeline you have.

With a specific scope in hand, you can evaluate providers against your actual need rather than their general reputation. A web developer who has built fifty similar sites in your industry is more relevant than a generalist with impressive-looking work in different sectors. For managed IT services, a provider who has clients of your company size and industry type will understand your environment better than one whose typical client is much larger or smaller.

Credentials and certifications in technology

Technology credentials vary enormously by specialty. For networking and infrastructure, Cisco certifications (CCNA, CCNP, CCIE) are well-regarded industry standards. For Microsoft environments, Microsoft certifications are relevant. For cybersecurity, the CISSP, CompTIA Security+, and Certified Ethical Hacker are recognized standards. Contracts and ownership in technology services

Technology service contracts have several elements that general service contracts do not. Work product ownership is the most critical: who owns the code, the design, the data, and any proprietary materials created during the engagement? If you hired a developer to build a website or an application, you should own the code when the engagement ends, not merely license it. This must be explicit in the contract; absent language on ownership, the creating party often retains it by default.

Data security and confidentiality obligations are equally important for any provider with access to your systems or customer data. The contract should specify what data the provider can access, how it is protected, what happens to it when the engagement ends, and what notification obligations exist if there is a breach. For managed IT providers, a service level agreement (SLA) should specify response and resolution times for different severity levels of issues.

Exit terms are often overlooked and should be read carefully.
Who owns a website or software built by an outside developer?
Under US copyright law, the default is that the creator of a work owns it, even if you paid them to create it, unless the contract explicitly transfers ownership to you (a work-for-hire agreement).
